Tea 101

Originating from the lush, rainy terrains of Assam, India, this black tea is renowned for its strong, brisk flavor profile. It boasts a malty tang with a deep body, complemented by a subtle aroma of dried fruits. For those who fancy a spicier twist, pairing it with any of our Chai Masalas elevates the experience, adding a warm, aromatic complexity.

Assam tea, like our Jorhat Assam, has a storied past, deeply rooted in the rich soil of India's Brahmaputra Valley. It was the British who commercialized tea cultivation in the region during the 1830s, using seeds smuggled from China. However, it was soon discovered that Assam had its indigenous tea variety, which was later classified as Camellia sinensis var. assamica. This variety is distinctively robust and malty, characteristics that define Jorhat Assam. Over the years, Assam tea has become a staple in many cultures, not just in India but around the world, adapting to various local tastes and preferences.

In different cultures, Assam tea is enjoyed in various forms. In Britain, it's often brewed strong and served with milk as a breakfast tea. In India, it's the backbone of the spiced concoction known as masala chai, mixed with spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger. This cultural versatility speaks to the tea's robust adaptability and widespread appeal.

We love Jorhat Assam for its bold, invigorating flavor that stands up beautifully both on its own and as a base for spiced chai. It's a tea that wakes you up in the morning and comforts you during a rainy afternoon. Its rich, malty essence, combined with the tangy depth, makes it a versatile choice for any tea lover looking to explore traditional Indian teas with a robust character.

Did you know that Assam is the world's largest tea-growing region? The unique climatic conditions of this area, with its high humidity, tropical temperatures, and nourishing rainfall, are what give Jorhat Assam its characteristic bold and brisk flavor.
